3/24/11: ANIME BOSTON: 29 DAYS AND COUNTING...

Anime Boston is just around the corner and we are madly working on our projects to finish it in time. If you go poking around our Twitter or LJ, you will get to see some photos of our progress!

Aside from participating in the Masquerade, we are also participating in a panel for the first time! The title is Cosplay Propmaking: Holy Crap How'd They Make That!? and we will be presenting it with our friends from Deep Dive Cosplay and BLiTZ Cosplay ! The panel is currently scheduled for Friday at 4 PM... Come and say hi!

1/13/11: HAPPY NEW YEAR!

In celebration of the year 2011, we've been hard at work at our latest projects which will definitely be one of our craziest (read: scariest) yet!

About Us

HOW IT ALL STARTED...

Cosplay for us first started in 2004. I had been interested in anime and Japanese popular culture for some time, and that year we were attending our very first convention, Anime Boston. So we decided to try making individual costumes for the occasion. Starting in 2005, we began making cosplays as a pair.The day after Anime Boston 2006 was over, however, I happened to see CLAMP's illustrations of the Japanese novel, Soryuuden, and I was inspired to take our cosplay to a whole new level. Or, as Samantha would call it, struck by pure insanity. Starting in September 2006, we began the project of a lifetime. Together with four other teenagers, we recreated the costumes, props, and armor worn by the four mythological Chinese kings featured in the novel. We worked diligently for more than 150 hours over eight months, and entered them into the Masquerade at Anime Boston that year where we won First Place for Craftsmanship in the Novice Division.Since then we have gone on to tackle even more challenging (Sam: insane and hellish) projects and have continued to compete and win awards. Long since past are the days when we used to work with cardboard and masking tape. And today, cosplay is an irreplaceable aspect of our lives.

2010: TRINITY BLOOD, ABEL & CAIN NIGHTROAD
Awards Won: Second Place Masters Division Craftsmanship - Anime Boston 2010 MasqueradeCompleted: April 2010Hours to Construct: Over 300 HoursJennifer: This costume was hell on earth. We apparently did not learn our lesson from last year and started really late, and yet managed to dedicate even more time on these projects than before.This was our first year competing in the Masters Division, and so we wanted to really pull out all the stops. Unfortunately, for the Masquerade in order to avoid potential accident, I had to go without some items so that I could pull off the skit we had prepared. Nothing major is missing, just my gloves and glasses really ^_^. But I'm kind of proud of those glasses, so hopefully we'll have pictures of the complete outfit soon!______________________________________Samantha: This costume became a life energy eating monster that took years off of my life. It was accompanied with all nighters and misery, and I now seem to be nocturnal.(-_-) But it was probably worth it... (>_>)

2009 - ETERNAL SONATA

Awards Won: First Place Intermediate Division Craftsmanship - Anime Boston 2009 MasqueradeCompleted: May 2009Hours to Construct: 150-200 HoursJennifer: Making this year's costume was an interesting experience... Granted, every year is an experience, but this year I learned the value of time. We started later than usual on these costumes, and yet we still ended up dedicating the same amount of time and effort we have in the past. Meaning there were a lot of long long nights that led into mornings ^_^;Everything was pretty much made from scratch. I made the sword much lighter and more sturdy; I could hold it (for the most part) properly and it didn't kill my arms too much to pose with. And the boots were GOOD this year!______________________________________Samantha: The boots were nice looking, but I sadly failed in the practicality department. (T_T) I could barely walk in them. The prop was blessedly light however, which is more than I can say for Jennifer.

2008 - .HACK GU

Awards Won: First Place Intermediate Division Craftsmanship - Anime Boston 2008 Masquerade; Honorable Mention for Excellence in Posing - Anime Boston 2008 MasqueradeCompleted: March 2008Hours to Construct: Over 200 HoursJennifer: Last year's costume was difficult, but this year was just plain crazy! I spent more than half of the total amount of time on the sword alone. Thank god for wonderflex, without it, I would never have been able to pull it off! And the fact that I had very little to sew.______________________________________Samantha: It was the first time I ever wore a wig; I could barely see in it. I own all three of these games, and I haven't even cleared the first one. (-_-)

2007 - SORYUUDEN

Awards Won: First Place Novice Division Craftsmanship - Anime Boston 2007 Masquerade; Judge's Award for Presentation - Anime Boston 2007 MasqueradeCompleted: April 2007Hours to Construct: 150-200 HoursJennifer: It's from a very obscure series, but I loved the character design and the detail so much I just couldn't resist. The first costume for which we pretty much went all out. I think my only complaint may be the shoes... Mainly because they were uncomfortable to wear for prolonged periods of time because of a small error in their design. They were also made at like 1 in the morning on Friday.______________________________________Samantha: I hated those tassles, they kept getting caught in my boots, and I had my hands full with my staff and that stupid branch... (-_-)

2006 - TALES OF SYMPHONIA 2

Awards Won: Staff-Vote Costume Contest Ribbon for Yuan Cosplay - Anime Boston 2006 Completed: May 2006Hours to Construct: 60-80 HoursJennifer: With Yuan being my one of my favorite male characters in Tales of Symphonia, I just had to make his costume. This marked the making of my very first large prop, and I was so pleased with how it came out. Again...no wig, but I styled my hair in the same fashion as Yuan.______________________________________Samantha: I had such a terrible haircut for this costume. (O_O) Agh.

2005 - TALES OF SYMPHONIA 1

2005: TALES OF SYMPHONIA, RAINE & GENIS SAGE
Completed: April 2005Hours to Construct: 40-60 HoursJennifer: The second cosplay we ever did, and the first we did together from the same series. We made these to wear for Anime Boston 2005. We didn't wear wigs back then, and either Sam was supposed to be a lot shorter or I was supposed to be a lot taller.___________________________________Samantha: I think our 2005 and 2006 costumes are the only ones that we've done that come from a video game that we've actually finished. (>_ <)
